Should I Give Up on the Split Jerk?, Greg Everett
Should I Give Up on the Split Jerk?
Greg Everett  |  June 30 2014  |  Ask Greg
Jessica Asks: As a novice female lifter I have issues with my split jerk drive. I start fine with the dip but always go forward on the drive no matter how hard I fight it. It's less so when I power jerk but I'm not sure whether I should try to switch completely or not given the fact that I just can't move the same weight. Now I'll be the first to admit I need to get stronger and that does play a part here but I often wonder if the split jerk is the most effective/efficient way for me to go. Here......

Erika Asks: I was debating all day if I should even attempt to ask a question, since I have this lack of self-confidence that comes with other people constantly needing to tell me something. I couldn't believe the article you just posted today, Advice: Sometimes It's Okay. But.... It is regarding exactly that. I Olympic lift at three different gyms. I train specifically for my Olympic lifts at one gym and I never heard this exact criticism. I go to two other gyms to supplement my lifts on my ow......
Technique Development Advice: Ask Greg, Greg Everett
Technique Development Advice: Ask Greg
Greg Everett  |  May 17 2012  |  Ask Greg
Dan Asks: I’m learning lifts for the first time after 20 years of martial arts, and PTing. My approach at the moment is technique, technique, technique – then when I feel I need the weight to progress the technique to add load so that the load is demanded by my technique progress. Eventually I guess my load will start demanding technique if you know what I mean... Also I’m following the one way I’ve been taught for a while – then later when nailed – I inten......
The Effects of Leg Length & Gut Size on the Olympic Lifts: Ask Greg, Greg Everett
The Effects of Leg Length & Gut Size on the Olympic Lifts: Ask Greg
Greg Everett  |  May 15 2012  |  Ask Greg
Josh Asks: What changes, mainly in the starting positions of the lifts, will people with long legs/short torso have to make compared to people with short legs/long torso? To what extent will these variations alter the execution of the lifts as well? Similarly, if an individual has an excessively large stomach, clearly the bar path won't be as vertical because the bar must travel around their gut. Aside from the obvious (losing weight) what tweaks can I make as a coach to help someone in that ......
Learning Technique Through Imitation, Matt Foreman
Learning Technique Through Imitation
Matt Foreman  |  April 2 2012  |  Ask Greg
Has it ever occurred to you that weightlifting is a monkey-see-monkey-do activity? I’ve thought a lot about this over the years. If there is one thing I’ve become absolutely convinced of, it’s that most athletes learn primarily by imitation. When people are trying a new athletic skill, like a snatch or a clean, the best tool for their learning is to watch that skill being performed correctly by somebody else, and then basically mimic what they’ve seen with ......
Knee Pain: Patellar Tendonitis and Coming Back to Weightlifting, Greg Everett
Knee Pain: Patellar Tendonitis and Coming Back to Weightlifting
Greg Everett  |  March 1 2012  |  Ask Greg
Andrew Asks: Been reading your site and came across your Q&A section and figured I'd give it a shot. I am a 25yr old male, 6'3" 230. Here is my dilemma: been training (see crossfit, crossfit football, etc) for about three years now with a recent emphasis on strength gaining starting back in october of last year to prepare for a powerlifting (unassisted) comp this past march. The work mainly consisted of 3x5 squats, bench, press, and deadlift(only ever two weeks) plus conditioning on ......
Learning the Olympic Lifts Lifts at Age 40, Greg Everett
Learning the Olympic Lifts Lifts at Age 40
Greg Everett  |  February 23 2012  |  Ask Greg
Vincenzo Asks: Hello Greg. I'm a 40 years Italian man. I train with weights since I was 16 years old. I stopped train at 32 years to resume in February 2011. Since then I train 3 times a week with just squats, deadlifts, bench press, press and power clean. I would like to know how your book could help me for learning the power clean, the power snatch and the power jerk (or push jerk). I think I'm too old to learn the olympic liftings like clean and snatch, so I limit myself to the shallower v......

Greg Everett  |  November 29 2011  |  Ask Greg
Ryan Asks: I have a question on your workouts. I like your programming for the Olympic lifting and find that extremely valuable and necessary. Do you recommend high intensity metcons too? I follow your lifting but find my metcon lagging. Do you recommend both? I want to train for next years CF games. Greg Says: The answer will depend entirely on the athlete's intentions, so in your case, wanting to compete in the CF games, the answer would be "yes". (to be clear......
Trouble with the Hook Grip, Greg Everett
Trouble with the Hook Grip
Greg Everett  |  October 30 2011  |  Ask Greg
Andy Asks: I have just purchased and am reading through your book now. Its is a great teaching tool. Thanks for it! I was curious about the hook grip you teach. I think i understand the technique, however it not really working out. The strength of the grip for me is very weak. I have been using it a month and just have trouble keeping that grip. Do I just need to give it more time? I have pretty stubby fingers. Is it just not optimal for everyone? I'm like 5'9- 5'10 (depends on who's asking). 8......
Weighted Dips for Football Players, Greg Everett
Weighted Dips for Football Players
Greg Everett  |  October 24 2011  |  Ask Greg
Joe Says: Hey guys I am a new subscriber to your site its awesome! I have a question for you? Our OL coach (High School Football) wants the entire OL/DL to do heavy weighted dips after each workout. I am opposed to this for several reasons. Kids use lousy form on dips! We do Bench Press and Pushups once a week adding 5 reps on the pushups each week.( I feel that’s more than enough tricep work in –season. We Squat and RDL once a week. Clean and Chin-ups once a......
